Chapter Thirteen
âDid you see that, Jack?â
âHuh?â
âThat angry man just tossed a screaming woman into the ice-cold brink.â
âMind yer business Roy, and hand me that flask. We donât need the copper down here again now that we landed ourselves a good spot to shelter.â
âIt was a woman, left for dead. We canât let her float away. Câmon.â Roy scooped his arm through the air.
âYer on yer own mate, I ainât seen nothinâ,â Jack said.
âA real gentleman you are. More like a gentlemanâs arse.â
Jack waved his hand at his friend and rolled closer to his makeshift bed by the fire.
Roy went alone to the end of the pier and glanced over the edge into blackness. âDamn it. Where did she go?â
He walked back to the site of the commotion and again gazed into a calm lake, blackened by the dark cloudy sky. âI canât see a God damn thing. Jack, get over here and help me look.â
âSod off. I have no mind to draw attention.â
âHere.â Barely a croak of a plea before a splash on the opposite side of the pier from where she had been thrown.
He dashed to the sound, lay flat out on the cold, wet pier and stretched himself toward the white arm barely visible above the water. âReach my hand darlin, I got ya.â
âI cannae reach.â Barely a whisper again before she sunk under the water once more.
Without a second thought, Roy dove into the frigid water, flailing his arms in circles until he connected with the coat of the fallen lady. Following the coat tail to her waist and then her shoulders, he linked his arm around her neck and dragged her lifeless body back to the pier. Climbing the slippery rocks to gain the top of the walkway was impossible so he swam with all his might the fifty yards back to shore, knowing if stopped, they would both be dead within seconds in the freezing water.
âWhat have ye gotten yerself into now? Dragginâ a dead body to our doorstep. Who in the name of Jesus do ye think they will blame?â Jack scoffed but he stretched out to help his friend and the lifeless woman from the water.
âShut your hole and help me drag her up near the fire.â
Before they reached the fire, she came to, coughing and moaning, instantly thrashing at her rescuers. âEasy now, youâre safe,â Roy held an arm around her back to help her sit up.
Fully awake her eyes were huge. Blood dripped down the side of her face, from a gash on her head.
âIâm going to take your coat and hang in on the branch there by the fire,â Roy explained.
She stood and helped as best she could to shrug out of the sodden coat.
âGet her a blanket,â Roy demanded.
âI will nae give up me only warmth,â Jack spat back.
âI will be fine,â she said, her voice hoarse and weak. âLet me sit by yer fire a spell.â
Roy kept his arm securely behind her as she stumbled toward the fire and landed hard on the ground beside it.
